Fortnite Chapter 3 Season 3 Competitive Storm Surge Update

Update: As of September 7, 2022, we've identified that the recently updated Storm Surge values have successfully improved server performance.

We have applied the new Storm Surge values to Solo and Trios Battle Royale Arena, and competitions.

Competitors,

On Tuesday, July 19, 2022, we updated Arena playlists and the Duos tournament playlist to alter Storm Surge. Our goal with these Storm Surge adjustments is to improve server performance in our high-end, single-lobby tournaments by enforcing aggression among competitors. Please see below for details on what’s changed:

What is Storm Surge?

Storm Surge is an in-game mechanic within Fortnite that activates to prioritize server performance when there are too many remaining players, in order to enforce aggression amidst said players. Storm Surge deals damage periodically to players that have dealt the least amount of damage within a match. This continues until a set number of players remain.

The timing of these changes is admittedly inconvenient in light of the upcoming FNCS Semi-Finals, and having players relearn these Storm Surge values in a few days is not easy. We felt this step was necessary to attain the best possible server performance for competitive events.

We will continue to identify additional long-term paths (unrelated to Storm Surge) to improve server performance, while also monitoring and making more adjustments to Storm Surge if necessary to all competitive playlists.

Thank you for your feedback and understanding.
