A New Light: Fortnite PC Now Supports Ray Tracing

9.17.2020
The Fortnite Team

Get ready to see Fortnite in a new light. Beginning today, PC players using supported NVIDIA GPU cards and DirectX12 can enable ray tracing and NVIDIA DLSS!

What is ray tracing?

The advanced rendering capability of ray tracing allows new visual and lighting effects previously not possible in Fortnite. With our latest update, we’re delivering improved ambient occlusion, shadows, reflections, and real-time global illumination.

How’s it look? The side-by-side screenshots below show how supporting PCs can create lifelike reflections and shadows when ray tracing is enabled. Nvidia has also pulled together a ray-traced map in Creative to show off the new tech. Use this Island code to check it out: 9189-0518-5408.

NVIDIA DLSS and Reflex Mode in Fortnite

In addition to ray tracing, NVIDIA DLSS DLSS boosts performance so you can enjoy ray tracing at higher frame rates. Fortnite features three DLSS options: Quality, Balanced, and Performance. These options control the DLSS rendering resolution, allowing you to choose the right balance between image quality and FPS.

Meanwhile, NVIDIA Reflex delivers the lowest latency in Fortnite. By integrating directly in Fortnite, Reflex Low Latency Mode aligns game engine work to complete just-in-time for rendering, eliminating the GPU render queue and reducing CPU back pressure in GPU intensive scenes.
