Fortnite Chapter 2 Season 8 Competitive Update

Hey competitors,

With the competitive season starting today we wanted to talk through a few updates to Arena and mention our competitive surveys that will be arriving sometime next month. Let’s dive right into it.

Arena Changes

As mentioned in our Chapter 2 Season 8 Competitive blog, we wanted to change Arena scoring to allow a more rewarding experience for players who reach Champion League. We’ve made a few adjustments to Hype accumulation based on your current division. Eliminations are valued more at lower divisions and we’ve increased the Bus Fare amount starting in Contender League to make crossing the threshold into Champion League slightly more difficult. An additional feature added to Arena this season: demotion. If the Bus Fare brings your Hype down a division, that will be the division you’re currently ranked in. To accommodate these changes, we’ve made small adjustments to matchmaking.

Lastly, we’ve turned off Arena fill in standard Battle Royale Arena modes (Late Game will still fill). We appreciate everyone who decided to test it out. We are currently evaluating the changes of player behavior with data and going through your feedback before deciding whether Arena fill may return.

Arena Preseason

Since establishing the Arena Preseason in Chapter 2 Season 6, we’ve seen numerous benefits. Operationally our team caps off each season with FNCS Finals, and we need this time of little to no tournaments to prepare for the upcoming season’s competitive offerings and build out the schedule. Season 7 we held the All-Star Play-In during the Preseason and it was a large part of why we kept Preseason going, so Champion-level players could compete in the event.

The Preseason also allows players to understand and experience the new items, features, and weapons that come with each season without large prized competitions.

Finally, these two weeks allow us the opportunity to prove out items we believe would be problematic in competitive playlists and establish a competitive loot pool before the competitive season begins. You all can enjoy the new items and features for a brief period, with no stakes attached, and sometimes even show us innovative ways to use items that we hadn’t thought of previously. The only exception is our Performance Evaluation tests that run in the NAE region sometimes during the Preseason. These are necessary to gather better performance data for each patch and are only available in NAE due to specialized server restraints.

Competitive Surveys

We want to hear more from you! We’ll be sending out a competitive focused survey to select players in the coming months. We’ll be looking for your feedback on a wide range of competitive topics.

If you’d like to participate, make sure you’ve opted-in to receive emails from Epic Games products for your Epic Games account. You can opt-in on the Epic Games website or go through the Epic Games Launcher by clicking your profile account and choosing Manage Account. This will take you straight to the website linked above. From there you’ll need to click on Communications and check the box that says “Yes, email me about Epic Games products, news, events and promotions.”

Epic Games Notification Account Settings

We plan to continue issuing surveys past next month, so make sure to stay opted-in past October if you’d like to receive more surveys from us.

That covers everything for this update. Good luck in the Chapter 2 Season 8 Competitive Season!
