From Don Quixote to dynamic gameplay in Legends of Castilla-La Mancha

Legends of Castilla-La Mancha isn’t just a game—it’s a gateway to culture, history, and tourism.

Developed by Einoow in partnership with the regional government of Castilla-La Mancha, Legends of Castilla-La Mancha was created to showcase one of Spain’s most historic regions during FITUR, the country’s largest international tourism fair.

Rather than simply recreating landmarks, the team built an interactive experience where players explore iconic locations, meet legendary characters, and learn about the region through gameplay.

We spoke with the developers about the creative vision and technical challenges behind bringing an entire region to life inside Fortnite.

Introducing Castilla-La Mancha to a new generation

The team’s objective on Legends of Castilla-La Mancha extended far beyond creating a Fortnite island.

“The goal was to showcase Castilla-La Mancha to the world through a platform like Fortnite, as a way to reach younger audiences who would otherwise be very difficult to connect with,” says Jose Luis Jurado Carmona, Co-Founder at NakamaLab.

That ambition came with a unique design challenge. Castilla-La Mancha is a vast region made up of five provinces, each with its own history, architecture, and cultural identity. Rather than attempting to recreate everything, the developers carefully selected the landmarks and stories that best represented each province.

The final experience features all five provinces, with three iconic locations from each, alongside a historical figure who guides players through its story. Naturally, no journey through Castilla-La Mancha would be complete without the region’s most famous literary hero, Don Quixote.

The experience introduces players to the region in a way that’s both entertaining and memorable, with a powerful blend of exploration, storytelling, and interactive gameplay.

A story players can experience their own way

While many Fortnite experiences are centered around combat, Legends of Castilla-La Mancha puts storytelling first.

Players are free to explore the map in any order, uncovering locations and completing activities at their own pace. Every destination offers a different style of gameplay, creating an experience that’s as varied as the region itself.

“This story-driven approach is disruptive compared to what you’d typically find in Fortnite,” says Jurado Carmona. “We give more prominence to the places, the characters, and what they’re trying to tell you, not just PvP combat.”

Across the island, players encounter 15 unique activities, ranging from memory games and interactive quizzes to parkour challenges and speed trials.

This variety keeps exploration fresh while encouraging players to engage with each location’s history and significance.

Verse made the experience possible

Creating a nonlinear adventure spanning multiple gameplay styles required more than traditional Fortnite devices.

The team relied heavily on Verse to orchestrate the entire experience, enabling players to tackle objectives in whatever order they chose while keeping progression, minigames, and quizzes functioning independently.

“Verse was key,” explains Jurado Carmona. “Orchestrating the entire architecture so players can experience the story in whatever order they choose, with each minigame having its own rules, progression systems, and quiz mechanics…we couldn’t have achieved this complexity with devices alone.”

Verse provided the flexibility to manage a highly modular experience while supporting diverse gameplay systems under one cohesive framework. It enabled the developers to build an island that feels less like a sequence of disconnected activities and more like a living interactive journey.

Recreating a real region inside Fortnite

One of the project’s greatest challenges was translating real-world locations into Fortnite while maintaining both authenticity and performance.

The developers needed each landmark to be immediately recognizable without reproducing every detail at full scale.

“One of our biggest challenges was recreating real-world locations within Fortnite, keeping them contained enough to be manageable, yet faithful enough that anyone would recognize them instantly,” says Jurado Carmona.

Fortnite’s extensive asset library accelerated the process, providing architectural pieces and environmental elements that closely matched the region’s distinctive style. When existing assets weren’t enough, the team created custom content using UEFN to capture the unique look of Castilla-La Mancha.

The result is an environment that feels authentic and also optimized for smooth gameplay.

Balancing scale and performance

Fitting an entire region into a single Fortnite island demanded careful technical planning. The team combined Fortnite assets, custom art, thoughtful level design, and extensive optimization techniques to ensure players could seamlessly explore the experience without sacrificing visual fidelity.

“We applied every optimization and level design technique possible to fit this entire territory into a single map without sacrificing authenticity,” says Jurado Carmona.

The finished island demonstrates how thoughtful design and efficient technical execution can make ambitious projects possible within Fortnite’s creative ecosystem.

A fresh way to tell stories in Fortnite

Legends of Castilla-La Mancha is a great example of how Fortnite and UEFN can be used for far more than traditional multiplayer experiences.

By combining interactive storytelling and educational content, Einoow created an experience that introduces players to the history, architecture, and legends of one of Spain’s most iconic regions—all through play.

Whether you’re interested in narrative design, Verse programming, environmental art, or simply exploring somewhere new, Legends of Castilla-La Mancha offers a compelling example of what’s possible with UEFN.
