Jump scares on demand in TRUST HIM? [HORROR]

Every horror map has jumpscares. But what happens when players get to control them?

In TRUST HIM? [HORROR], developer BigWahed (@nerodftn) puts a new twist on the classic horror experience by giving players the power to scare their friends whenever they least expect it.

With remotes available through in-island transactions, multiple jumpscare options, and a cooldown system to keep the chaos in check, this simple mechanic adds a whole new layer of unpredictability to the game.

Here's how the Fortnite developer brought it to life.

Turning players into the scare

The idea came from wanting to make horror gameplay a little more interactive, and a lot more entertaining.

“The map already has classic horror moments, but I thought it would be fun to let players scare their friends from time to time,” explains BigWahed. “So I added a system that lets them trigger a jumpscare for everyone.”

The result? Unexpected scares, hilarious reactions, and plenty of opportunities to catch friends off guard.

“It often creates funny moments, since people usually don’t expect it. And in fast-paced horror games like this one, it’s something I’ve always found entertaining.”

A simple system with scary results

Behind the scares is a straightforward system built around triggers and item granters.

When a player purchases a jumpscare, a trigger activates an item granter that gives them a remote control. Using the remote triggers a jumpscare for everyone in the match. Once activated, the remote disappears from the player's inventory, making it a single-use item.

“For this small system, I used very simple but effective logic,” says BigWahed.

It's a lightweight approach that gives players a surprising amount of control over the horror experience without overcomplicating the gameplay.

More scares, more choices

For players who want to take their scares even further, there's another option.

Instead of purchasing individual jumpscares, players can unlock a different remote that gives them access to jumpscares throughout the entire match.

This remote opens a simple UI where players can choose between three different jumpscares, giving them more ways to surprise their friends.

Of course, unlimited access doesn't mean unlimited spam. A 15-second cooldown between uses keeps things balanced while ensuring players can still have plenty of fun.

“The system, therefore, remains very fast and efficient,” explains BigWahed.

Who can you really trust?

By putting jumpscares directly in players' hands, BigWahed turns a familiar horror mechanic into something more social, unpredictable, and entertaining.

It's a reminder that sometimes, a simple mechanic can create some of the most memorable gameplay moments, especially when your friends are the ones behind the scares.
