Introducing a New Text Chat Experience in Fortnite

The Fortnite Team

We have redesigned text chat and are expanding its availability to all Fortnite islands starting December 10. Creators can now choose to include text chat in their islands so players can socialize and strategize.

How to Text Chat in Fortnite

There are three ways to text chat in Fortnite – in a Party Channel, Game Channel or in a Direct Message. Here’s how it works:

  • Party Channel: When you join a party, you will automatically be connected to a Party Channel and can chat with all of your party members across any Fortnite island you’re playing. Party Channel chat persists for as long as you're in Fortnite and in that party.

  • Game Channel: When you join an island that supports Game Channel text chat, you're in a public conversation with other players who are on the same instance of the island, regardless of their location on the island. Game Channel chat persists for as long as you're on the island. It will be up to creators to decide whether they support Game Channels in their islands, and whether the channel includes all players on the island or just teams.

  • Direct Messages (DMs): You can send one-on-one messages to other players on your friends list. To DM friends, you can hit the "+" button when text chat is open, or you can click the ‘DM’ button from your friend’s profile. Direct Messages persist for as long as you're in Fortnite. Note: you can only send or receive DMs from players on your Fortnite or platform friends list who are online.

Once you’ve opened text chat, you can quickly toggle between your Party Channel, Game Channel, and DM Channels. If you close text chat to focus on gameplay, you’ll still be able to preview incoming text chat messages.

Text Chat Filters & Reporting

We are introducing a new ‘Personal Information’ text chat filter that helps remove certain types of information — like email addresses and credit card numbers — from text chat conversations in real-time. We’ve also introduced improvements to the mature language filter to better filter out various kinds of mature language and toxicity. Both filters will always be on for players under 13 in all text chats and always on for all players in Game Channels.

We’re also expanding player reporting in Fortnite to include text reporting. Similar to voice reporting, if messages are reportable in a text chat, you will be able to submit your recent text chats to Epic as evidence for review when reporting suspected violations of our Community Rules. This will help us take action against players who violate our rules. You can learn more about text reporting in our text and voice reporting FAQs

You can manage your text chat settings in the new ‘Communications’ tab, and parents or guardians can use Parental Controls on the Epic Account Portal to manage chat permissions for their child’s account.
