How to Use Fortnite's Competitive Servers - Region Guide

Whether you’re playing regular, Ranked, or Competitive matches in Fortnite, your server connection needs to be steady. Having the correct server region selected is a key to that!

What Are Fortnite Server Regions?

Server regions, often called matchmaking regions, are how Fortnite player bases are geographically grouped. These regions host dedicated data centers worldwide. Your game automatically connects to the closest one, though you are able to select a different server region.

Having the correct server region selected can lower your ping (lag), as physical distance between you and the server directly influences your in-game response speed.

Here is the current list of all Fortnite server locations:

  • NA-East
  • NA-Central
  • NA-West
  • Europe
  • Brazil
  • Oceania
  • Asia
  • Middle East

How to Change Your Server Region in Fortnite

Manually switching Fortnite matchmaking regions allows you to test server latency and determine your true ping. This can be especially helpful before jumping into a tournament..

To manually change your region:

  1. From the Lobby, navigate to the Main Menu and select Settings(gear icon).
  2. Go to the Game tab and locate the Language and Region section.
  3. Hover over Matchmaking Region to display the list of server regions.
  4. Use the arrows to select your desired Fortnite region and click Apply.

Why Ping Matters in Competitive Fortnite

In a game of build battles and lightning-fast edits, network latency determines whether your actions register first on the server. Every millisecond counts, and low ping provides a decisive, visible edge.

Here’s how lower ping can help improve your game in Fortnite:

  • The player with the lowest ping almost always wins the "coin flip" to claim an opponent's wall after it breaks, securing box control.
  • Lower latency minimizes the delay between pressing a build key and the piece appearing, ensuring your defensive structures are placed before incoming shots register.
  • High ping creates a noticeable, sluggish delay when confirming edits, forcing you to play slower and losing you critical seconds in key fights.
  • Low ping ensures better synchronization between your game and the server, reducing instances where a shot appears to hit on your screen but fails to register damage.

Tips to Reduce Ping

To achieve consistently low ping and reduce lag, try these network optimization tactics.

  • Ditch wi-fi for ethernet: A wired connection (Cat6 or better) provides stability and the fastest path to Fortnite server locations, eliminating wireless interference and packet loss.
  • Implement quality of service (QoS): Access your router settings and prioritize your console or PC's network traffic. This ensures Fortnite data takes precedence over streaming or background downloads.
  • Adjust DNS servers: Switch from your ISP's default DNS to a known fast provider like Cloudflare (1.1.1.1) or Google (8.8.8.8). This often speeds up the time it takes to initially connect to game servers.
  • Employ geo-filtering: As a more advanced measure, use specialized gaming router features (like Netduma's Geo-Filter) to manually restrict the range of acceptable servers within your chosen region (e.g., NA-Central). This guarantees connection to the server cluster that’s physically closest to you.

Tournament Matchmaking vs. Regular Matchmaking

Competitive integrity requires a common battlefield. That’s why, for most Epic-hosted North American tournaments, NA-East players are placed into NA-Central tournaments and will see NAC events in their Compete tab. NA-West and NA-Central players continue to see tournaments in their respective regions for consistency. This equalizes the playing field for North American players coast-to-coast.

Fortnite Server FAQ

Can I manually change server regions?

Yes. You can manually adjust your matchmaking region in the Game tab of the Fortnite settings.

Is the in-game latency reading accurate?

The latency number shown in the region selection menu is a helpful estimate, but not your exact, real-time ping. It fluctuates based on network load and routing. For the most accurate measurement, rely on in-game performance indicators like your ability to retain and replace builds, as well as editing responsiveness.

Where are Fortnite servers?

Exact server locations aren’t precise, and can shift between different locations within the same region. Broadly, servers are located in NA-East, NA-Central, NA-West, Europe, Brazil, Oceania, Asia, and Middle East.
